He is the second Vocaloid introduced by Crypton Future Media and was developed with the original Vocaloid software. He debuted on February 2006. His appearance was designed by Kawasaki_Takashi. Unlike the previous Vocaloids, Kaito initially did not sell well, selling only 500 units. However, after Vocaloid became a cultural phenomenon with Vocaloid2, Kaito was rediscovered and became much more popular. Afterwards, he appeared in the Project Diva games and in many MMD videos as well having songs composed for him. Much like how Miku is often depicted as favoring leeks, Kaito is often depicted as having a deep love of ice cream. Family Mart even sells Kaito ice cream.
