Popular Nintendo crossover platformer/fighting game franchise created by Sakurai_Masahiro. the original game debuted on January 21, 1999 for the Nintendo_64.

It is different from many other fighting games in that the objective is not to deplete your opponent's health bar but to make it impossible for your opponent to return to the arena, which is often a floating platform/ piece of land. It also features usage of items (though they can be turned off or you can customize which items you want in the fight) and platforming elements; most stages have additional platforms that the player can jump on and some have auto-scrolling sections. Many of the stages have obstacles that make the fight more chaotic though there are stages with zero obstacles.

The games provide many options to customize your fights however you wish like lightning mode which amplifies everyone's speed or stamina mode which makes the game more like a traditional fighting game in that your primary objective is to deplete your opponent's health. Brawl even includes a Stage Editor that allows you to create your own stage.

All the games allow 4 players to play at the same time. The Wii U version of the fourth game allows up to eight players to play at the same time and includes a few massive stages to accommodate the increase in combatants.

The series is presented as if all of the characters in the game are a bunch of trophies/toys even in Brawl's more fleshed out story mode. The original game's intro and ending implies that the whole game is a child playing with his/her toys.

The series' soundtracks consist of remixes of classic Nintendo game songs and new tunes. Starting with Melee, much of the music became orchestrated and in Brawl, many well known video game composers like Uematsu Nobuo contributed to the game's immense soundtrack. Brawl is also the first SSB game to include a fleshed out story mode in the form of Subspace Emissary, an expansion of the adventure mode in Melee. However, the fourth Smash Bros. game does not have cutscenes due to Sakurai feeling that players uploading Brawl's cutscenes on video sites like Youtube ruined the experience of being able to view the cutscenes for the first time.

The series's success has managed to influence the original games the character came from. It is responsible for helping introduce Fire Emblem, with the appearance of Marth and Roy in Melee, to many North Americans and eventually, the localization of Fire Emblem games. It also gave Captain Falcon his famous Falcon Punch, which has made its way into the F Zero anime adaptation and is referenced in Captain Falcon's theme song in F-Zero GX though he never uses the move as GX is a racing game. Master Hand and Crazy Hand have made an appearance in Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. It may have also played a part in the revival of Kid Icarus, Kid Icarus Uprising, which uses Pit and Palutena's designs in this game and is also directed by Sakurai Masahiro.

The original game was not originally intended to be a crossover, but during development Sakurai came up with the idea to include Nintendo's icons in the fighting game he was working on. Being a crossover series, there are numerous references to the games the characters originate from. From Brawl onwards, players can play short playable demos of games like Super Mario World, Star Fox 64, etc. called masterpieces as a way of showcasing the high moments of the game's characters and giving unfamiliar players a sense of the cast's roots. Starting with Brawl's inclusion of Solid Snake and Sonic, characters from third party developers like Sega and Konami have joined the roster though said characters have had at least one game that was released on a Nintendo console. Smash Bros. Wii U adds Capcom's original Rockman and Namco's Pac-man.

The series' massive success and, at the time of the original game's debut, unique mechanics helped popularize the platform fighter genre. The series, particularly Melee, is also popular amongst fighting game tourney players. Melee has been featured at EVO twice: in 2007 and in 2013. Its 2013 appearance was made possible thanks to support from the fans and the game was the oldest fighting game featured at the tournament. While seven of the eight games featured had already been determined, the position of the eighth game was decided via online donations, the proceeds of which would be given to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Smash Bros. fans ultimately donated the most and Melee became the eighth game featured. Smash Bros. tournament play is typically done without items and consists of one on one duels. Players also pick arenas with minimal obstacles or arenas with few unpredictable elements to ensure that there will be nothing that can interfere with the fight and that the victory will be entirely determined by skill. This tourney style play has become very popular in its own right. However, there has notoriously been quite a bit of tension between players who insist on playing with items and players who insist on playing tourney style throughout the fan base's history. To satisfy these two groups with very different tastes, the fourth Smash Bros. game has two modes: For Fun and For Glory. The former features the chaotic stages and use of items that non-tourney Smash Bros. play is famous for while the latter adjusts the game's stages to remove all unpredictable elements and obstacles and items and sets all fights to one on one matches.

The series has an unique take on the pause screen. Instead of a menu, the game's camera will zoom in on the player that pressed pause. The camera can also be rotated, and this is often used by players to take amusing screenshots. This was expanded in Brawl which allowed players to take snapshots.

Brawl has also spawned quite a few mods like a move swapping mod and a mod that mimics the mechanics of Melee.

The fourth Super Smash Bros. game is the first multi-platform Smash Bros. game, and was released on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS with the two platforms being able to interact . Namco is also involved in the game's production and this collaboration has also led to Namco's iconic video game character Pac-Man joining the game's roster. The game introduces a move customization feature that allows players to modify the characters' moves and use them. However, the customized moves can't be used in multiplayer.

The fifth Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released on December 7, 2018 for the Nintendo Switch. This game has the largest roster of all Super Smash Bros. games because it brings back every single playable character in the franchise's history alongside new members.
