Now Viewing: 300_(movie)Tag type: Copyright A historical action comic created by Frank Miller and colored by Lynn Varley. It ran from May to September 1998. It's a fictionalized retelling of the historical Battle of Thermopylae centered around Leonidas of Sparta. The comic was inspired by and had its title derived from the 1962 film The 300 Spartans, which Miller watched as a child and liked at the time, but was disappointed when he revisited it as an adult. The comic was inspired by his childhood memories of the film. The story became much more popular in the public consciousness once it was adapted into a film by Warner Bros. The film was directed by Zack Snyder, and written by Snyder, Kurt Johnstad and Michael b. Gordon. It was scored by Tyler Bates. It starred Gerard Butler and Lena Headey. An unfinished version of the film debuted on December 9, 2006 at the Butt Numb a thon festival with the final complete version releasing on March 9, 2007. It is the second live action adaptation of a Miller comic after Sin City and like said film, Snyder aimed to make the film be as faithful as possible to the source with him directly basing the cinematography off of the comic's double page spreads. Unlike many other live action historical battle epics, this film deliberately goes for a fantastical hyper-macho comic book version of its historical events. The film utilized extensive special effects, being shot with a digital backlot, putting prosthetics on extras, and CGI. However, the actors' chiseled physiques were all real, and the cast underwent rigorous physical training, which Snyder himself also participated in, to achieve said looks. The film received mixed reviews from professional critics but was a massive box office smash, grossing $456 million at the box office. It launched and codified Snyder's directorial style as Snyder became known for directing comic book inspired action films that employ extensive CG effects that pairs heavily stylized visuals with somber dramatic performances from the cast. This film and Snyder's subsequent work popularized a particular style of slow motion to add impact to actions: an action can start off being shown in slow motion before suddenly speeding up and slowing down again. Besides the film's visual style, it also helped contribute to the popular image of Spartans being tough warriors and its most famous line "This! Is! Sparta!" inspired numerous parodies. The film made Gerard Butler into a leading man star, and paved the way for more action roles. The film was followed by a prequel called 300: Rise of an Empire in 2014, which was directed by Noam Murro instead, but still written by Snyder and Johnstad. The film also received mixed reviews but was a box office success.
