The game marks the return of Donkey Kong to the collect a thon 3D platformer genre, a genre that hasn't been revisited since Donkey Kong 64 in 1999. It's the first mainline Donkey Kong game to be developed by primarily Japanese staff, much of which consisted of developers who worked on Super Mario Odyssey. There's a big gold rush happening on Ingot Isle and Donkey Kong has arrived there to participate. The island is filled with Banandium Gold and Banandium Gems just waiting to be discovered and the banana-loving DK is looking forward to getting his hands on some golden bananas. However, his trip soon goes wrong once a corrupt mining company, VoidCo, steals Banandium Gems and drives the island underground. Now stuck deep underground in a Hollow Earth space, DK teams up with a young girl version of Pauline, an aspiring singer, to return to the surface, fulfill their individual dreams, and foil VoidCo's plans. The game is an expansion of some mechanics that were used in Odyssey with its core gameplay inspired by voxel technology that the programmers had experimented with during Odyssey's development and after its release. Said technology was used to design the levels for the game, and the game was released as a launch title for Switch 2 due to the console having the necessary power to realize the developers' ambitions. The game encourages exploration which is aided by Donkey Kong's super strength. The player can dig, destroy, and rearrange the terrain to get to where they need to go or discover secrets. Donkey Kong can also gain new abilities via transformations that are unlocked over the course of the game. The game includes an art mode called DK Artist where the player can carve and paint their own sculptures. The game revamps some aspects of the Donkey_Kong_(series) with the game featuring a new design for Donkey Kong that technically debuted in Mario Kart World. This new design combines elements from Miyamoto Shigeru's cartoonish design for Donkey Kong and Rare artist Kevin Bayliss's redesign from Donkey Kong Country that was used until this game's release. This design makes DK more cartoonishly expressive with his physique remaining close to Bayliss's design. It also reframes DK's relationship with Pauline by having her serve as his ally and friend throughout the game as opposed to a damsel in distress. All of the animal characters speak in grunts that are translated for the players' benefit with Pauline being the only character to speak in human language. The game is also the first to have its primary antagonists be fellow monkeys as opposed to other species. The game was a massive critical success, receiving virtually universal positive reviews.
