Now Viewing: flclTag type: Copyright フリクリ Furi Kuri. It's localized as Fooly Cooly in English. A surreal sci fi action comedy anime OVA that ran from April 26, 2000 to March 16, 2001. It was animated by Gainax. It was directed by Tsurumaki_Kazuya, one of Anno Hideaki's usual collaborators with Anno this time voicing a small role, written by Enokido Yoji, and has rock soundtrack composed by the The Pillows with the other instrumental music being provided by Mitsumune Shinkichi. Rock is the core musical identity of the franchise with the electric guitar being the most prominent prop and the OVA's sequels are named after various subgenres of rock music The characters were designed by Sadamoto_Yoshiyuki. It tells the story of Nandaba Naoto, a downbeat twelve year old boy who lives with his father and grandfather in the town of Mabase. He idolizes his older brother who left town to play baseball, viewing him as the model of what a mature person looks like. To be like his brother, he has tried to adopt his brother's mannerisms, picking up baseball, hanging out with his brother's girlfriend Mamimi, and has put on a cynical detached persona, claiming that "Nothing amazing ever happens here." Naoto is soon forced to eat his words once an eccentric yet attractive woman named Harahara Haruko accidentally runs him over with her Vespa, and after reviving him with CPR, follows up with smacking him on the head with a Rickenbacker 4001 bass guitar. To make things even weirder, this forehead injury has caused him to develop the ability to summon robots from a portal from his head. Haruko ingratiates herself into the Nandaba family saying that she's an alien investigator from the Galactic Space Police Brotherhood and Naoto is now in danger from other robots. Naoto, along with Canti, a robot he summoned from his head, must fight off other robots that invade Mabase, pulling he and his town in an intergalactic conflict, and putting Naoto on a bizarre journey that will make him truly grow up. This series, which was created by Tsurumaki shortly after the completion of End of Evangelion, was intended as a breather project after the famously dark film. The series is emblematic of Gainax's style of the 2000s with its mixture of over the top action, off the wall comedy with fast and furious visual and verbal jokes, and having a story that underneath all of the outlandishness is a coming of age story for its protagonist. Many of the creators who worked on FLCL went on to work on Top_Wo_Nerae!_2, and the signature style codified by this series would carry over to Trigger_(company) which was largely made up of the creative talent that defined Gainax in the 2000s. In the case of FLCL, the series' high energy style was intended by Tsurumaki to invoke the feel of a Japanese TV commercial and to tell a story that was compact, yet dense. The series is notable for a being a cult hit. Although it was never a top seller, it had a significant influence and fanbase amongst many figures involved in the animation and manga industries. Fujimoto Tatsuki described his hit series Chainsaw Man as a sort of dark version of FLCL, it was required viewing for the animation staff behind Avatar_(series), and Adult Swim, the broadcasting block that aired the series in North America continuously ran re-runs of its English dub. The series' jokes were the most difficult part to translate for the localizers and they opted to adjust some jokes to references that North American viewers were more likely to understand. Nevertheless, the series was a signifcant success in North America, launching Kari Walhgren's, who played Haruko, voice acting career. Its' success in North America led to FLCL receiving multiple sequels over a decade after its conclusion though none of the sequels involve the original creative staff.
