Depictions of him outside of the original film frequently take inspiration from his appearance in the last act of the film and the theatrical poster, where he has marked his face with face paint and wears a black vest adorned with grenades. He's former US Army Special Forces Colonel who has retired from the military to raise his daughter Jenny Matrix as a single father. John is a gentle and loving father to Jenny, but his wrath is incurred once Jenny is kidnapped to force John to assassinate a politician in Val Verde. The plan quickly goes awry for the kidnappers due to them underestimating what John is willing to do to get his daughter back. John acts with a stoic intensity, rarely cracking a smile, but at the same time, has a morbid sense of humor with quite a few of his kills being followed by a casual quip about his victim's fate. In combat, he uses his superhuman physical strength to lift objects others couldn't lift or improvise weapons. He's also skilled with using variety of guns, so much so, that he's easily able to take down an army's worth of enemies single-handedly. Bennett, his former teammate turned enemy, is the only antagonist who understands what John is capable of and, subsequently, is the biggest obstacle to John's quest. He is played by Arnold_Schwarzenegger and the character is one of his most well known roles with him embodying many of the traits that the general public associates with the actor. In spite of this, Schwarzenegger actually wasn't the first choice for the role with the script being pitched to multiple actors. Once Schwarzenegger agreed to do the film, the script was changed to match him.
