Now Viewing: max_payne_(series)Tag type: Copyright A third person shooter game series created by the Finnish studio Remedy_Entertainment. The first game was released July 25, 2001. The series follows the adventures of hard-boiled detective Max Payne_(character) as he investigates various conspiracies and shoots his way through armies of criminals. Remedy Entertainment worked on the first two games, while the third game was developed by Rockstar Games. The franchise is primarily fusion of two film genres. The games' stories and aesthetics are inspired by gritty film noir while the combat takes inspiration from the stylized slow motion heavy gunplay of Hong Kong heroic bloodshed films. The games' cutscenes take inspiration from Western graphic novels and consist of voice acted comic panels. The third game eschews the comic book style and uses cinematic cutscenes visually inspired by Tony Scott's 2000s era films, particularly Man on Fire. The franchise was popular, critically acclaimed, and influential in being the first successful attempt to adapt Hong Kong style gun-fu into a video game format and inspired a wave subsequent HK film inspired shooter games and slow motion mechanics in other games. The first game was adapted into a 2008 film which was directed by John Moore and starred Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. Said adaptation was very different from the game, which caused some backlash from the game's producer. It received generally negative critical reviews but still made a profit at the box office.
