It ran from March 2006 to February 2007. It's a Marvel comic series that starred a team of, at the time of publication, lesser known Marvel heroes with only The Captain being the only original main hero. The comic also has an official theme song, which was written by Nick Lowe (also the editor of the comic), and Matt Lowe. The story follows a team of superheroes: Monica Rambeau, Tabitha Smith, Aaron Stack, Elsa Bloodstone, and the Captain, who have been assembled to fight Unusual Weapons of Mass Destruction (U.W.M.D). The heroes have been put together under the guidance of H.A.T.E, which stands for Highest Anti-Terrorism Effort. However, the heroes soon find that H.A.T.E itself doesn't have noble intentions and is actually funded by a corporation that was previously known as a terrorist group. The team rebel against their employers and embark on missions where they fight off the U.W.M.D.s while being pursued by H.A.T.E. Ellis' mission statement for the series was to create a 'pure comic book', meaning that the story embraces and takes up to eleven all of the over the top action and outlandish scenarios that the superhero genre is known for, and mixing them with irreverent humor. Although it uses established Marvel characters, the series was intended to be stand alone and non-canonical, with some of the characters being portrayed comically differently from how they're typically written. Thanks to the series' popularity, some aspects of the story have made their way to the main Marvel canon. The series won three Eagle Awards for Favorite New Comicbook, Favorite Comics Story Published During 2006, and Favorite Comics Villain. It was also named by the Young Adult Library Services Association as one of the Top Ten Great Graphic Novels for Teens for 2007.
