Now Viewing: sayonara_eriTag type: Copyright さよなら絵梨, Goodbye Eri. A drama oneshot created by Fujimoto_Tatsuki. It was released on Shounen Jump+ on April 11, 2022. Much like most of Fujimoto's previous manga, it is a melancholic story with moments of crude humor as comic relief, and has numerous film references. This manga, more than his past manga, is even more heavily inspired by cinema with the manga being deliberately styled to resemble a home made amateur film shot with a smartphone, with out of focus shots and motion blurs thanks to sudden camera movements. Most of the panels, save for a few key story moments, are horizontal rectangles, making the visuals look like they were shot by a smartphone held horizontally. The story is heavily meta, being about a production of a movie, and blurs the line between reality and film. It follows Itou Yuuta, a teen boy who has been gifted a smartphone for his birthday. What should be a happy moment for him turns awkward once his mother gives him a task: Yuuta's mother is dying from a terminal illness, and she wants him to record her final days. Yuuta obeys his mother, but on her last day on Earth, he's suddenly finds himself unable to see her at the hospital and runs off without recording his mother's passing. He uses the footage he compiled to edit a movie that he shows his high school classmates. Unfortunately for him, his edit of the movie, particularly his decision to end the movie by having the hospital his mother died in explode, makes him a laughing stock amongst his peers. Yuuta is so upset that he seriously considers committing suicide, complete with filming a final message and showing his own suicide on camera, but he ultimately doesn't follow through once he meets Eri, a movie buff classmate who sincerely likes the movie he made. The two of them form a friendship based around their mutual love of movies. Eri gives Yuuta a request, she wants him to make another movie. This time, a movie based around their relationship, but with a touch of fantasy. The one shot was another big success for Fujimoto, earning over 2.2 million views on the Shounen Jump+ website, and was critically acclaimed, being nominated for a Harvey Award in the Best Manga category in 2023 and, in 2024, was nominated for the Eisner Award in the Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia category.
