Now Viewing: look_back_(manga)Tag type: Copyright ルックバック A one shot manga created by Fujimoto_Tatsuki and released on Shounen_Jump+ on July 19, 2021. Unlike his serialized work for the publisher, this manga is a down to earth drama although it still features many of Fujimoto's storytelling trademarks, such as meta reflections on art and a melancholic atmosphere. It was adapted into an anime film by Studio_Durian and released on June 28, 2024. It was written and directed by Oshiyama Kiyotaka, and scored by Nakamura Haruka. It is a minimalist story that focuses on two characters, Fujino Ayumu and Kyomoto, two aspiring artists. The former had a knack for drawing manga since elementary school and even published manga for her school's paper. The latter doesn't draw manga, but is technically proficient in painting, so much so, that Fujino perceives her as a rival. Fujino decides to dedicate herself entirely to her art in order to surpass her rival, sacrificing her entire social life in the process, but is frustrated by being unable to surpass Kyomoto's artistic talent. In middle school, Fujino ends up meeting and interacting with her rival face to face when she's tasked with bringing Kyomoto's diploma to her as the latter is a complete shut-in. To her surprise, Fujino discovers that Kyomoto is actually a big fan of hers, and this inspires Fujino to not only pick up art again, but to create a new manga with her newfound friend called Shark Kick. The two of them develop their friendship and their art skills, but a major event will force them to reevaluate their motivations for producing art. . . Out of all of Fujimoto's stories, this one is notably his most personal with the story itself reflecting some of Fujimoto's personal struggles concerning his career. The manga was highly successful upon release, receiving over 4 million reads within two days. It was number one on Takarajimasha's Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2022 list of best manga for male readers, and won the Rakuten Kobo's E-book Award in the "One Complete Volume! One-Shot Manga" category in 2023. In spite of its massive success, it did receive some controversy over a major plot point that led to rereleases tweaking it to be less offensive. The film grossed ¥1,017,961,780 at the Japanese box office within 18 days.
