The films follow the adventures of Callahan as he skirts the edge of what's considered acceptable under the law to catch criminals. The film franchise began in 1971 with the original film and ended in 1988 with the last film, The Dead Pool. Each installment has a different director and writer, but Eastwood is the star of each entry and the films usually feature a jazz score by Lalo Schifrin. The films were box office successes and many of Callahan's quotes have become iconic. However, Callahan's tactics in fighting crime were also a persistent source of controversy throughout the series' run with some critics considering them to be unacceptable for a police officer. At the same time, the series had a massive influence on police action films with many protagonists being modeled after Harry.
