Now Viewing: chainsaw_manTag type: Copyright チェンソーマン An urban fantasy action manga created by Fujimoto_Tatsuki, and the most famous work of his. Its first part ran from December 3, 2018 to December 4, 2020 in Weekly Shounen Jump. Its second part started on July 13, 2022 on Shounen Jump +. The series is a fast-paced work that bounces between over the top bloody action, moody introspection, crude humor, and cosmic horror. Its known for its heavily envelope-pushing content with much more brutal violence and sexuality than most shounen manga, which Fujimoto was able to do thanks to being given considerable creative freedom. Besides Fujimoto's trademark love of cinema, Fujimoto was inspired by the 2000 anime FLCL and the Nihei Tsutomu manga Abara. Fujimoto describes Chainsaw Man as a darker version of the former and a pop version of the latter. The series has multiple status quo shaking plot twists, so be wary of spoilers when looking up the series online. The manga was adapted by Mappa into an anime TV series with a first season that ran from October 12, 2022 to December 28, 2022. The anime was treated as a big passion project by MAPPA, which assembled a team of popular and acclaimed animators to work on the series. The anime was directed by Nakayama_Ryuu, who had previously worked on the similarly themed action series Jujutsu Kaisen, and Nakazono Masato and written by Seko Hiroshi. The action scenes were directed by Yoshihara_Tatsuya who was known for being the main director of Black Clover. The studio even commissioned a large group of popular musicians to work on the music for the series, with each episode having its own unique ending song and animation that reflects the current events of the story, something rare for an anime. The main score was composed by Ushio Kensuke. The story is set in a world superficially similar to our world, except for the presence of Devils whose presence has also altered the course of human history. Devils are based off of human fears and the stronger people's fear grows of the concept the Devils represent, the more powerful the Devils become. The Devils are opposed by government-supported human devil hunters who do their best to protect humanity. The story follows Denji, a teenage boy trapped in poverty and debt to the yakuza. Denji is a devil hunter working for the yakuza in order to pay off his father's seemingly endless debts. He is stuck in this job because of his father's passing and he has no choice but to work for the yakuza if he wants to live. Denji's sole friend is Pochita, a friendly dog-like devil. Denji yearns for a normal life where he can enjoy things like having a piece of toast, have relationships with girls, and sleep in a comfy bed, but he grimly accepts his current lot in life. Denji's life changes forever once the yakuza decide to betray Denji, having made a deal with a devil for more power. Denji is killed, but he is revived by Pochita who gives Denji the power to transform himself into Chainsaw Man, a devil with a chainsaw head and arms. The newly empowered Denji defeats the Zombie Devil, catching the attention of Makima, the leader of the Public Safety Division. Makima is interested in Denji and his powers and she recruits him as a devil hunter under Public Safety, an offer Denji immediately accepts thanks to it being an improvement on his current life and getting him closer to achieving his life long dreams. Denji is assigned to work with the serious and professional Hayakawa Aki, and the wild card fiend Power, to protect humanity from Devils. Their main target is the Gun Devil, a devil responsible for the worst massacre in human history. As Denji works with his newfound companions, he is steadily faced with revelations that'll force him to reassess his life. . . The manga was a major success even before its anime adaptation was announced. Within its first year of publication, the manga ranked fourth on Takarajimasha's Kono Manga ga Sugoi! list of best manga of 2020 for male readers. It received multiple awards such as Best Shounen Manga at the 66th Shogakukan Manga Award, Best Manga at the Harvey Award, and Best Shounen Manga at 27th Manga Barcelona. It sold over 20 million copies by November 2022.
