It debuted on February 10, 2017. The novel spawned multiple manga adaptations and spinoffs and was adapted into an anime TV series by A-1_Pictures. The anime was directed by Ishii Toshimisa, and written by Ouno Toshiya. The soundtrack was composed by frequent collaborators Sawano Hiroyuki and Yamamoto Kohta. The first season ran from April 11, 2021 to June 20, 2021. Part 2 ran from October 3, 2021 to Mar 19, 2022. It is set in the Republic of San Magnolia, a kingdom dominated by an ethnic group known as the Alba, who are distinguished by their fair skin and light hair. San Magnolia has been at war with the Empire of Giad, which employs a deadly army called the Legion. This army consists of robotic spider-like robot tanks. In response, San Magnolia has assembled its own robot spider tank army, the Juggernauts, which are directed by human commanders called Handlers who are safely secluded from the battlefield. It is a war with no human casualties. . . or so San Magnolia's propaganda wants its populace to believe. Protagonist and Handler Major Vladilena Millize, knows the truth behind the Juggernauts; they aren't robots at all and are actually piloted by humans, referred to as the 86. They were once part of San Magnolia and enjoyed equal rights as the Albas, but in response to the war, their rights were taken away and they are now forced to fight and die for San Magnolia while their Alba handlers are safe within the walls of the capital. Lena is the only Handler who seems to take her job seriously and recognizes the humanity of the 86 and is determined to give the 86 the equality they deserve. Lena is tasked to be the Handler of the infamous Spearhead Squadron, an 86 squadron that has a high turnover rate for its Handlers. It also boasts one of the most skilled 86 pilots/warriors in the army, the Undertaker, who is also responsible for Spearhead's high turnover rate. Lena sets out to befriend and work together with Spearhead who are skeptical of her due to their long history of discrimination from Alba. As Lena works with her squadron to fight for San Magnolia, they steadily uncover the dark secrets behind the warring kingdoms. . . The story is structured around two characters who share the protagonist position, Lena and Shinei Nouzen (the Undertaker), with the story alternating between their POVs. The series' tone also alternates between the squadron engaging in lighthearted antics as they bond with each other and a grim depiction of war. The story's concept was inspired by the development of drone warfare in the 2000s-2010s, with the novel's mechs being a fictional stand in for drones. Asato wanted to explore how such weaponry would affect war and humanity. She was also inspired by the 2007 film adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Mist. The novel won the Grand Prize at the 23rd Dengeki Novel Prize award in 2016, which is what the first volume of the series was originally created for.
