The character is tagged as Cutie_Honey_(character) The original manga ran from October 1, 1973 to April 1, 1974. It spawned numerous alternate versions and adaptations. The first anime adaptation was animated by Toei and directed by Katsumata Tomoharu and written by Tsuji Masaki with a soundtrack composed by Watanabe Takeo. The former two previously worked on the first anime adaptation of Nagai's Devilman. The TV series ran from October 13, 1973 to March 30, 1974. It tells the story of Kisaragi Honey, a seemingly normal Catholic high school girl who finds out she's anything but normal when her father is murdered by the Panther Claw organization. She discovers that she's in fact an android who's armed with a special device that can create matter from air, giving her the ability to transform herself into various forms with the pink-haired warrior Cutie Honey being the most prominent. Honey embarks on quest to avenge her father and stop Panther Claw's nefarious plans. The series was built around the concept of a transforming hero. The initial idea was given to Nagai by a Toei producer. Nagai then took inspiration from Bannai_Taro and Ai_no_Senshi_Rainbowman to craft Honey. He was inspired to make the protagonist a woman by his previous works Harenchi_Gakuen and Abarashi_Ikka, which prominently featured female characters, and by the 1927 movie Metropolis. Once the protagonist's gender was settled on, the series was planned to target a female audience with the manga set to premiere in the shojo magazine Ribbon. The then upcoming anime was planned to premiere at 7:00 on Net TV, a time slot usually reserved for magical girl shows, but the time slot was instead given to Miracle Shoujo Limit Chan, which underperformed. The anime was moved to the hour show, Majuu Kaihen Daihenshin! which broadcasted shows targeted towards a male audience. This sudden schedule change altered the plans for the manga/anime, but led to the creation of a highly influential series. The decision was made to aim for a male target audience, and to that end, Nagai changed the story to be more action-oriented and played up Honey's sexuality. The series was marketed as a science fiction work, but it ended up having a massive impact on the magical girl genre. The changes led to Cutie Honey becoming the first magical girl series with a male target audience and also led to Honey becoming the first magical girl warrior, a magical girl who uses her powers to transform and directly fight against evil. In spite of being targeted towards males, the series became surprisingly popular amongst females influencing works that directly targeted girls such as Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. Its popularity amongst girls lead to the creation of a female-targeted incarnation of Cutie Honey, Cutie Honey Flash. The anime is famous for its opening theme song, which was originally performed by Maekawa Yoko and composed by Watanabe Takeo, with lyrics by Claude Q. Virtually every incarnation of the series uses a remix of this song as its opening theme, a tradition that was only broken by Cutie Honey Universe although the song itself still appears in the series.
