Now Viewing: devilmanTag type: Copyright デビルマン A dark fantasy superhero action horror series created by Nagai_Gou. The original manga ran from June 11, 1972 to June 24, 1973. The manga's concept was born from Nagai's previous manga Maou_Dante. Producers from Toei Animation approached Nagai asking to turn it into to a TV series. However, they wanted the protagonist to look more human and this gave Nagai the idea for this manga. Nagai wrote the story as an anti-war allegory and he aimed to show that there was no justice in war and no justification for humans to kill each other. It tells the story of Fudou Akira, a kind but timid Japanese boy who lives with his friend Makimura Miki after his parents' death. Akira is so timid that he has to rely on Miki to defend him from bullies. However, this changes after his best friend Asuka Ryou tells him about a mysterious mask his father found. His father died finding the mask and its existence confirms the presence of demons on Earth. To prevent the revival of demons, a pure hearted person must harness demonic power to battle against them. Akira agrees to help Ryou after the survive an encounter with some real demons. The two of them head to Ryou's father's basement, which doubles as a nightclub. Once there, Ryou provokes a fight to draw the demons' attention and in the ensuing chaos, a powerful demon called Amon possesses Akira, but he doesn't lose his sense of self. Rather, he gains Amon's powers and inherits some aspects of his personality, turning Akira into Devilman, a hero who battles against demons. Akira uses his newfound power to fight against a variety of demons. However, the demonic presence on Earth remains strong, and they are willing to escalate things until the fate of all humanity hangs in the balance. . . The manga is one of the most iconic of Nagai's work and influenced many subsequent dark fantasy stories. It sold over 50 million copies by March 2017. It has been adapted numerous times. The first adaptation was the 1972 anime, which ran from July 8, 1972 to April 7, 1973. It was directed by Akehi Masayuki and Katsumata Tomoharu, and was written by Tsuji Masaki. The soundtrack was composed by Misawa Gou. While this adaptation shares a roughly similar premise, it goes into a completely different direction story-wise and is notably much more light-hearted in tone. Subsequent adaptations follow the original manga more closely in story and tone, preserving the original's brutal violence and dark plot, with Devilman_Crybaby being the most faithful. It was also adapted into a live action film in 2004, which starred Izaki Hisato, Izaki Yusuke, and Sakai Ayana as Akira, Ryo, and Miki respectively.
