Now Viewing: macross_frontierTag type: Copyright マクロスF (フロンティア) A mecha action romance anime TV series that was animated by Satelight. It is the fifth main installment of the Macross franchise and the third TV series. Its 1st pilot episode was released on December 23, 2007, the 25th anniversary of the Macross franchise. The main series ran from April 4, 2008 to September 26, 2008. It was directed by franchise mech designer and co-creator Kawamori_Shoji and Kikuchi Yasuhito. It was written by Yoshino Hiroyuki. Kanno Yoko, who previously composed the soundtrack for Macross Plus, returns to compose the soundtrack for this series. The soundtrack mixes orchestral music and J-pop. The pop songs were performed by May'n, who is the singing voice of Sheryl Nome, and Nakajima_Megumi who sings as and voices Ranka Lee. The characters were designed by Ebata_Risa and Takahashi_Yuuichi. The series revolves around the eponymous space colony, which is the 25th New Macross Colonial Fleet. Humans and the giant Zentraedi coexist peacefully on this fleet with the former living in a San Francisco-inspired city and the latter living in a community designed to complement their giant size. The series focuses on three central characters: Saotome Alto, an ex-kabuki actor who aspires to be a pilot and is a member of his school's aviation club, Sheryl Nome, the galaxy's biggest pop superstar, and Ranka Lee, a quarter-Zentraedi waitress with budding musical talent. The three of them cross paths when Sheryl arrives at the fleet as part of a tour. Alto and his fellow club members are hired to help perform at Sheryl Nome's concert. On the way there, Saotome meets Ranka and the two of them quickly develop a connection. However, their lives are changed forever when the Fleet is invaded by a mysterious enemy force known as the Vajra, dragging the entire fleet into a new intergalactic war. . . This installment of the franchise is notably more faithful to the original series and features numerous homages and allusions to it. Like that series, it is a space opera that combines large scale battles/dogfights with love triangle drama. However, it's still a stand-alone story with its own quirks. The series was immensely successful upon release with the series selling the highest number of Blu-rays of all Bandai Visual releases. The series' soundtrack was also a top seller with its first soundtrack Macross Frontier O.S.T.1 Nyan FRO reaching #3 in the Oricon charts. It was the first anime soundtrack in 11 years to make the Top 3. Its singles altogether sold 500,000 copies. The success of the music launched the careers of its two main singers, May'n and Nakajima Megumi. The series was remade as two movies titled Macross Frontier: Itsuwari no Utahime, and Macross Frontier: Sayonara no Tsubasa. Although they are retellings, they do not follow the original exactly and there's a considerable amount of new material unique to the films.
