It was directed by Kurokawa Fumio and written by Mukuroji Keiko and Nakanishi Ryuuzou. The soundtrack was composed by Higuchi Yasuo. It is an adaptation of the 1905 Frances Hogdson Burnett novel A Little Princess and is part of the World_Masterpiece_Theater series. Like many other Masterpiece Theater works, the anime follows the general plot of its source material, but includes a considerable amount of new material to extend the story to fill 40+ episodes. It is 1885, and Sarah Crewe, the daughter of a wealthy Englishman and a Frenchwoman, is returning to London with her widowed father Ralph Crewe to attend an all girls' seminary school to learn how to be a proper lady. Ralph will return to India to continue his diamond mine business. Sarah, unlike the other girls, grew up in India, and this is the first time she will be away from her beloved father. Her early days at the school go relatively smoothly. Although she earns the ire of the school headmaster Maria Minchin, who only tolerates Sarah because of her wealth, and the school's former star pupil Lavinia Herbert, she quickly becomes the school's star pupil thanks to her intelligence, wealth, beauty, grace, and kindness. She befriends Ermengarde (the class dunce), Becky (the poor and oft mistreated new maid), Lottie (the youngest student in the school), and Peter (a working class boy whom Sarah hires as her carriage driver and an anime original character). However, on Sarah's birthday, she receives a shocking bit of news that forever changes her status at the school. . . The series was popular not only in Japan, but also in the Philippines, which inspired the country to make its own adaptation of A Little Princess titled Sarah... Ang Munting Prinsesa in 1995. This film starred Camille Prats as Sara, Angelica Panganiban as Becky, and Jean Garcia as Miss Minchin. This adaptation takes a lot of inspiration from this anime's take on the story, such as the inclusion of Peter.
