The title has two meanings with saga being a reference to the real life location the series is set in, Saga_Prefecture, and a reference to the word saga, meaning story. It was directed by Sakai Munehisa, written by Murakoshi Shigeru. The instrumental soundtrack was composed by Takahashi Yasuharu while the vocal songs, which cover a wide range of genres like J-pop, hip hop, rock, jazz, etc, are written by various composers and performed by the main voice actresses. The characters were designed by Fukagawa_Kasumi. The first season ran from October 4, 2018 – December 20, 2018. The second season, subtitled Revenge, ran from April 8, 2021 to June 24, 2021. It has been adapted into multiple manga that don't simply directly adapt the anime storyline but add on to it by focusing on other characters and including new material. Minamoto Sakura is a teen girl and an aspiring idol singer who wakes up one day ready to make a big change in her life and pursue her dreams, only to be killed by a truck the moment she sets foot outside her house. However, she wakes up to find herself resurrected as a zombie, but with no memory of her past life. She quickly learns that she has been revived by the eccentric idol manager Tatsumi Koutarou who has concocted an insane plan to save Saga Prefecture via a group of zombie idol singers, and Sakura has just been inducted into the group! Sakura must now work with 6 other fellow deceased girls from various time periods to save Saga as the idol group Franchouchou without letting the general public discover their secret. The series was one of the major surprise successes of 2018, which was exacerbated by its misleading pre-release marketing that didn't reveal anything about its true premise. It was voted the top show of the year at the Anime General Election 2018 and won the 2019 Tokyo Anime Awards Festival award for Animation of the Year, and the series became a popular idol franchise in its own right. Like fellow idol franchises, the main seiyuu behind Franchouchou, except Mitsuishi Kotono whose character doesn't sing, became a real idol group, performing concerts and reenacting scenes from the anime in character on stage.
