Pixiv tag:ワンピース

Tag refers to the enormously popular pirate action adventure series created by Oda_Eiichirou, building off of some of the ideas he came up with in one-shots like Romance Dawn, which is effectively an One Piece prototype, and published in Shonen_Jump. The swimsuit is tagged as one-piece_Swimsuit. The manga began on August 4, 1997. Like many shonen action mangaka, Oda was inspired by Toriyama Akira and got a chance to work with his idol on a One Piece/Dragon Ball crossover called Cross Epoch. Oda was also inspired by the 1974 anime Chiisana Viking Bikke, which he credits as inspiring his interest in pirates.

The manga was adapted by two different studios. The first adaptation was a short stand alone OVA episode animated by Production_I.G called One Piece: Taose! Kaizoku Ganzack, which featured a completely different cast and crew from the much more well known 2nd adaptation, and was used hand-drawn cel animation. This short was directed by Taniguchi Goro, written by Kitajima Hiroaki, and had a soundtrack composed by Motomichi Toshiya, and characters designed by Kagawa_Hisashi. The second and and the main anime adaptation was animated by Toei_Animation and started on October 20, 1999. All subsequent One Piece anime work was handled by Toei. The series was directed by Uda Konosuke (1999-2006), Sakai Munehisa (2006-2008), and Miyamoto Hiroaki (2008-). It is written by Takegami Junki (1999-2006) and Uesaka Hiroyuki (2006-). The soundtrack is composed by Tanaka Kouhei and Hamaguchi Shiro.

It is the story of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy who Plans to become king of the pirates by building a strong crew and attaining the mythical treasure of the former pirate king Gol D. Roger, One Piece. Luffy's quest will be an extremely difficult and dangerous one as various other powerful pirate groups are competing to get their hands on the One Piece which is located deep within the recesses of one of the more hazardous areas of the world, the Grand Line. Luffy, however, is undeterred and he firmly believes in his and his crew's ability to get the One Piece.

The series is notable for its intentionally cartoonish and larger than life style. The majority of the cast have outrageous, even by anime/manga standards, powers and personality quirks and all major villains have a unique evil laugh. The characters also have a tendency to express themselves intensely. It is not uncommon for characters to have tears and snot running down their face when experiencing sorrow. The series often whiplashes in mood and a single scene can go from wacky comedy, tragedy, tense action, and back again. It is also famous for its extensive use of the narrative technique chekhov's gun with many characters and plot points that seem inconsequential turning up again, sometimes hundreds of chapters later.

The series' story strongly emphasizes friendship and dreams/ambition with many characters, both hero and villain, having a grand dream of some kind that forms their main motivation for their behavior. The series places platonic relationships above romantic ones, which Oda has for the most part intentionally avoided because he believes that the series' young male target audience isn't interested in reading about such relationships.

In terms of sales, One Piece is the most successful anime/manga to date with over 345 million copies being sold worldwide. By 2016, it ascended to becoming the third best selling comic ever, behind only Batman and Superman. Its extreme popularity has contributed to the series' length being longer than the originally intended run of five years. Oda planned out the ending long beforehand, which he intends to follow even as he and he has come up with many new ideas to expand the story. The anime adaptation's soundtrack has also received critical acclaim and in 2002 Tanaka won a Best Music for a TV series award at the Tokyo International Anime Fair for his work on this series.

The series has been dubbed into English twice. The first dub in 2004 was handled by 4kids Entertainment, who were also responsible for dubbing Yu-gi-oh! Duel Masters into English. This dub made many edits to the series, which included toning down content that the localizers felt would be too much for the young target audience they were aiming for to handle, replacing Tanaka's score with a new one by the company's musicians, and significantly altering the series' plot. This dub is particularly infamous for these many changes and the strong negative reception this dub received tarnished 4kids Entertainment's reputation, which Vice President of Digital Media Mark Kirk acknowledged in an interview with Anime News Network in 2010. This dub was canceled, leaving the series incomplete. On 2006, Funimation acquired the rights to One Piece and began dubbing the long-running series in English, starting over from the beginning and avoiding the censorship that the first dub was notorious for.

It received an English language live action adaptation on Netflix that debuted on August 31, 2023. The series' cast and crew was filled with fans of the anime/manga, something that was highlighted in its promotion. It was developed by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda and original creator Oda was involved in the production as executive producer and had a hand in casting. The score was composed by Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli who previously scored the Netflix adaptation of The Witcher. The score primarily consists of new music but there are some nods to Tanaka Kouhei's score for the TV anime. The series also has a special Japanese dub that has the seiyuu from the anime reprise their roles. The series was designed to bring in newcomers to the series while staying faithful to the anime/manga's spirit. The series became a surprise success, as live action adaptations of anime are often met with skepticism or ridicule, scoring generally positive reviews from critics and fans.

Due to the series' massive amount of characters, they will be listed here: List_of_One_Piece_characters
