Now Viewing: shin_godzillaTag type: Copyright (シン・ゴジラ) Tag refers to the 2016 Japanese reboot of Godzilla_(series). It is the 3rd reboot of the Godzilla series and was released on July 25, 2016. It is the first Japanese Godzilla film since Godzilla Final Wars in 2004 and was in part inspired by the success of the 2014 American Godzilla film. This installment is directed by famed anime creator Anno_Hideaki, who also wrote the script, and Higuchi Shinji who previously worked on the Gamera reboot in the 1990s. The orchestral score is composed by frequent Anno collaborator Sagisu Shiro. Although the film has otherwise no connection to the anime, the film's marketing notably emphasized that its director is the same man who created Neon Genesis Evangelion and on April Fool's, fake crossover images between Godzilla and Evangelion were officially produced for the film. The film stars Hasegawa Hiroki, Takenouchi Yutaka, and Ishihara Satomi. This film is a complete reboot that replaces the original 1954 film. However, the film's tone is also closer to said film, being much darker in tone and having Godzilla as the sole antagonist. The Japanese coast guard is investigating an abandoned yacht in Tokyo Bay when they are suddenly attacked by something in the water. The Tokyo Bay line mysteriously floods shortly afterwards. Japan's Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Rando Yaguchi realizes that there is a massive living creature lurking in Japan's waters and tries to convince his fellow Cabinet members of the imminent danger. Unfortunately, his attempt falls on deaf ears and the government's slow response proves to be costly as the creature rises from the ocean and begins wreaking havoc on the land. Yaguchi is tasked with assembling a team to research and find a way to stop the creature. The US government sends a Japanese-American envoy named Kayoko Ann Paterson to assist him in this task, but they do not have much time, for the creature, who they call Godzilla after some covered up research papers, grows more powerful with each passing day. . . The film was a massive success both critically and financially and was the most successful live action film directed by Anno. It earned ￥5.3 billion (US$51.63 million) a month after its release. Making the film also lifted Anno's spirits, as Anno had fallen into another deep depression due to the stress of making Rebuild of Evangelion 3.0 and he had initially refused Toho's offer to direct. The film took heavy inspiration from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami and approaches the classic Godzilla plot from a more political angle, critiquing the Japanese government's ability to handle national crises. This Godzilla was created with a mixture of puppets, animatronics, and CG with the film still hewing close to the visual style of the classic rubber suit Godzilla effects in spite of the CG use. The Shin in the title notably has many meanings. It can mean new, true, or God.
