Capcom released the first game in August 1987, and has total home sales exceeding 29 million units. The franchise, particularly Street Fighter 2, is widely credited as popularizing the fighting game genre and starting a massive influx of competitive arcade fighting games during the 1990s It is one of Capcom's most iconic franchises and its characters have consistently appeared in crossovers. It has been adapted into live action films and one live action web series, anime, and manga. Although it is not an official adaptation, the 1993 Hong Kong movie Chāojí Xuéxiào Bàwàng (Future Cops) features characters clearly inspired by the Street Fighter cast. It is also set in the same universe as Final Fight whose characters have appeared in Street Fighter games as playable characters and as cameos. A few Street Fighter characters make cameos in the Cyberconnect2 action game Asura's Wrath. Asura himself can even battle Ryu and Gouki (Akuma). The series has no relation to the Sonny Chiba film series of the same name.
