Now Viewing: the_fast_and_the_furiousTag type: Copyright Tag refers to the very popular series of car-themed action films starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. It is created by Universal Studios and one of the most financially successful franchises produced by the studio. The first film was released on June 22, 2001. The franchise started off as a series of films entirely focused on street racing and the first film's success popularized street racing and the import tuner subculture, became Walker's breakthrough role, and solidified Diesel as a popular action star. Starting with Fast Five, the franchise's focus broadened with the heroes taking on non-street racer antagonists. While there were still many car chases, fistfights became more common and actors with martial arts experience, whether in movies or in real life, were included in the cast, such as Joe Taslim, Gina Carano, Tony Jaa, etc. Alongside the broadened focus, the series' action scenes became increasingly over the top and the scale of the story grew bigger and bigger. While the series was always financially successful, it was not until the fifth film that the franchise started to gain a more positive critical reception. The series has had a multitude of directors and writers working on the films, but the most common ones are director Justin Lin and writer Chris Morgan who began working on the franchise with the third film. Lin also imported a character, Han, from a previously unaffiliated film, Better Luck Tomorrow, he worked on, making said film part of the franchise's universe. Starting with the fourth film, Fast and Furious, the franchise developed stronger direct continuity with each film introducing plot elements that have a significant impact on or directly lead into subsequent installments as well as bringing back characters from previous films. The series generally follows the adventures of undercover cop Brian O'Connor and the Toretto clan, led by Dominic Toretto. Brian, a skilled driver himself, is sent to infiltrate infamous street racer/thief Toretto's gang to find out whether or not they were behind a recent series of truck heists. Brian, however, finds himself increasingly drawn into Dom's world and family and his loyalties shifting towards Dom. Besides the action, the series repeatedly emphasizes how the main characters, even though most of them aren't biologically related, are like a family. This close relationship was mirrored by the actors, who became close friends over the course of the franchise. Besides street racing, the franchise is closely associated with hip hop. Each entry of the series has, at the very least, a rapper in a supporting role. Each film also has hip hop songs written specifically for the film. The franchise is known for its unusual naming scheme. Each film title is a variation on the franchise title The Fast and the Furious: the second film is called 2 Fast 2 Furious, the third The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, the fourth Fast and Furious, the fifth Fast Five, etc. The films have spawned video game adaptations as well a ride, titled Fast and Furious Supercharged, at Universal Studios theme park.
