Now Viewing: samurai_champlooTag type: Copyright Anachronistic 2004 chanbara series animated by Manglobe. The series ran from May 19, 2004 to March 19, 2005. The series blends hip hop culture with a feudal Japan setting. The title is a reference to the series' genre mix. The word Champloo comes from the Okinawa word chanpuruu, which means to mix. It is often considered a spiritual successor to Cowboy Bebop and is also directed by Watanabe Shinichiro and shares a similar episodic style. It was written by Obara Shinji with characters designed by Nakazawa_Kazuto. The hip hop soundtrack was composed by Tsutchie, Fat Jon, Nujabes, and Force of Nature. It focuses on the various adventures of Jin, Mugen, and Fuu who has managed to get the former two, despite their vast differences and the fact that they tried to kill each other the first time they met, to be her bodyguards on her quest to find her missing father. The setting is intentionally anachronistic and the series even directly says so in its opening scene. While it appears to be a vaguely feudal Japan-ish setting, there are many references to a wide variety of historical events in Japan's history, many of which in real life happened centuries apart. Hip hop music and culture features prominently in the series such as the presence of graffiti, beat-boxing, and Mugen's fighting style being based off of breakdancing.
