The series technically originated as the 1972 novel First Blood written by David Morell, which was adapted into a film, which notably alters the book's ending and portrays Rambo more sympathetically in comparison to the book's darker character, in 1982 with Sylvester Stallone in the lead role as John Rambo. Each film except the fourth, which was composed by Brian Tyler who would go on to work on the soundtracks for Stallone's Expendables series, features a soundtrack composed by Jerry Goldsmith and are some of his most well known work. The series' protagonist is one of the more iconic examples of a one man army style action hero in Hollywood cinema. Rambo is a highly competent American soldier skilled in all manners of warfare and combat; taking out his enemies via stealth, various vehicles, improvised weapons, hand to hand combat, and straightforward guns blazing. He racks up a very high body count due to these abilities, but ironically in the first film, he only 'kills' one person and said kill is more of an accident, which is actually a lower body count in comparison to the book. The films were internationally successful, especially the second film Rambo: First Blood Part 2. They were responsible for establishing Stallone, who had previously starred in mostly drama films, as an action star and he would star in more action films as a result of the series' popularity. They were also well received in Japan as well and quite a few run and action games like Ikari Warriors and Contra are inspired by the films. Metal Gear's Roy Campbell originally looked like Colonel Trautman from the Rambo films until he was redesigned by Shinkawa Yoji. Metal Gear Solid 3 is inspired by both James Bond and Rambo First Blood Part 2 as it mostly takes place in the jungle much like the latter film and when Snake fires a M63 machine gun he even yells a battle cry like Rambo's. The film series itself has also been adapted into video games. Despite the heavy amount of violence in the films, they were adapted into a family friendly animation series called Rambo: The Force of Freedom, which features much more outlandish scenarios than the films and is also the first family friendly adaptation of a more adult-oriented live action film series. This also caused the creators some difficulty. Not only did they had to tone down the violence of the films, but they did not know how to convey Rambo's war trauma in a way that children could understand, so they opted not to mention this aspect of Rambo's character. The name Rambo, pronounced in Japanese as rambou, means violent and rough, though this is likely a coincidence on the creators' part; the character gets his last name from the apple company called Rambo. The film series also has an odd and inconsistent naming scheme, the first film is titled First Blood like its source, the second film is titled Rambo: First Blood Part 2, the third is titled Rambo 3, and the fourth is simply titled Rambo. The British movie Son of Rambow is not part of the series, but is something of an affectionate and nostalgic tribute to it as the film is about a group of young boys in the 1980s trying to recreate the movie First Blood.
