Now Viewing: monty_oumTag type: Artist An Asian American 3D CG animator born on June 22, 1981 and passed away on February 1, 2015. He was born Monyreak Oum, but went by Monty. He was of Cambodian, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese descent. He started with photo manipulation and moved onto 3d rendering. He had a background and interest in dance, which he practiced when he was not working on his animations. He also had some experience in game design working for companies like Midway and Namco, and worked on Namco's adaptation of Afro Samurai, but he was more interested in film/animation work, which is what he is most known for. He is most well known for his action animations which often have a female-dominant cast and feature intricate choreography. Besides video games, his action scenes are also inspired by anime, video games, and Hong Kong action films. He cited Neon Genesis Evangelion and Final Fantasy VII as two works that greatly influenced him and considered Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann to be his favorite anime. He also tended to choreograph fights to sync with the background music. He worked extensively with motion capture, often donning a mocap suit himself and performing his characters' movements. He became well known amongst video game fans with his crossover action animation Haloid and followed that up with Dead_Fantasy. Outside of action animations, he liked to do 3D animations of characters dancing and is particularly fond of Korean pop music. The characters in his early pre-Haloid animation work were mostly inserts of his friends and himself. It would not be until RWBY that he created an animation with characters that he himself created. Almost all of his projects were done singlehandedly. He started off as a fan of Rooster Teeth's popular Halo machinama Red vs. Blue but he eventually became an employee of the company when he was hired by Rooster Teeth to work on the animation for the series, starting with Season 8, and was responsible for the exaggerated action seen in the Seasons 8-10. He was affiliated with them since then, creating a series of his own, RWBY, with other Rooster Teeth members and appearing in the company's other projects. He was also known for being a workaholic, spending a lot of his time on his animation work to the point that he got little sleep or rest. It was common for fans to point out that he looks tired during interviews and tell him to get more sleep. To him, time was something that absolutely should not be wasted; to that end, he went as far as to rip out keyboard keys that he felt did not contribute to his work. However, he still maintained close relations with others and was often known for encouraging others to purse their dreams like he did. He also tended to retweet cosplay that he liked and intentionally designed RWBY's characters to be easy to cosplay and was briefly married to cosplayer Sheena Duquette before his untimely passing. He often included crows or references to them in his animations. His logo is a flock of crows flying towards the sun. Unfortunately, ten days prior to his death, he suddenly suffered a severe allergic reaction during a medical checkup that put him in a coma and ultimately led to his passing. During the time he was in the hospital, fans, friends, and family managed to raise $200,026 to help Monty and Sheena and pay for Monty's medical bills within 3 days through GoFundMe.com.
