The soundtrack is composed by the band Radwimps. The film is comparatively more light-hearted and less melancholic than Shinkai's previous romance dramas. The film is also set in the same universe as Kotonoha_no_Niwa and has a cameo from the female lead of said film. It debuted on July 3, 2016 at Anime Expo. Tachibana Taki, a Tokyo city boy who works in an Italian restaurant, and Miyamizu Mitsuha, a girl who lives in the rural town of Itomi and the daughter of the town's mayor, experience a strange and inexplicable event. On some days, the two of them switch bodies for one day. The next day, they wake up with no memory of the past day's events, but their friends and family are shocked by the sudden change in personality the two of them exhibit. They initially write off this peculiar occurrence as merely an unusually realistic dream, only to find that they continue to randomly switch bodies. The two of them find that they are able to communicate with each other via text messages and actual written messages and they come to an agreement on what to do whenever they switch bodies. Even though they have yet to actually meet each other face-to-face, they gradually fall in love with each other and plan to meet each other, but due to a variety of metaphysical forces, their chances of seeing each other are very slim. . . The film is notably the most successful film to date for the oft-praised filmmaker/animator Shinkai. By October 2016 it grossed 15,414,488,300 yen in Japan and occupied the number one spot in the box office for more than 2 months. At the 49th Sitges Film Festival, it won the Best Animated Feature Length Award. Shinkai himself has expressed mixed feelings towards this film's success. While he is happy that the film has done well, he also feels that viewers overrate the film. The film's poster, depicting the leads and the separate worlds they live in and two comets, is often parodied by replacing the leads with characters from other works. The movie has no relation to the 1954 Japanese movie of the same name, although they coincidentally are romance movies that managed to defeat a Godzilla movie at the Japanese box office.
