According to him, - Calcium (Ca) is an original character who is completely mechanical, and can take on any form by substitution of parts. Her default or 'original' body is a mechanical skeleton. - Karune Calcium is the name for her 'half-flesh version', when she is cosplaying Hatsune Miku, but still has bones & mecha parts visible. - Karune Miku is a version with no bones or mecha parts visible, cosplaying Hatsune Miku. They are all the same person. On Gelbooru, they are currently all tagged with karune_calcium. Karune Calcium was officially recognized by Crypton as a derivative work. Deino didn't seem very happy about that, noting that some versions of the character barely have any Hatsune Miku features, and made it clear that Calcium belongs to him. The name has evolved along with the character; earlier, she was called Calcium (Karushiumu) Hatsune. Later, this was abbreviated to Karune. Karune is written in kanji as 骸音; the first character means 'bones; corpse; skeleton' and the second is the character for sound, also used in the names of many of the Vocaloids. On 2011/03/15, Deino was going through his archive of pictures and discovered that the first Karune Calcium pictures were produced on 2009/03/15, so he decided that it was her birthday, and she was two. The idea for the Ca character was around for about a year before that, and developed by degrees; he made 2009/03/15 her birthday as well. The bug on Calcium's head is a funamushi ("wharf roach - species of isopod closely related to the sea slater; Ligia exotica" - JEDICT) named Natorium, or Nato-kun for short. Because Ca's thinking parts can be transplanted into any type of body (such as a car or PC), always putting the same type of bug on her head makes it clear who it is. It has been said that she wears it for therapy. Deino describes Calcium as 'Cheerful, very masochistic, and an exhibitionist.' He often receives comments that she looks 'S', and wants to clarify that's she's really an 'M'.
