It is a dark psychological drama directed by Todd Philips, notably going against his usual style of raunchy comedy, and written by Philips and Scott Silver. It stars Joaquin Phoenix as the eponymous character. The cello-heavy soundtrack was composed by Hildur Guðnadóttir. The film provides a possible origin story for the iconic Batman villain, The Joker. However, it is not based off of any particular incarnation of the character and is mostly an original story. It is set in a Gotham based off of 1970s-80s era New York in the year 1981. The man who would become the Joker, Arthur Fleck, is a poor mentally ill clown who aspires to be a comedian and be a guest on his favorite talk show with his idol Murray Franklin. Unfortunately, he is burdened by the responsibility of taking care of his even more mentally ill mother, Penny, making ends meet financially, and struggles with his own mental condition. Arthur suffers from a disorder that causes him to laugh uncontrollably even when he knows it's completely inappropriate for him to do so socially. This only draws negative attention towards him and also hampers his ability to be the great stand up comedian he dreams of being and Fleck seems doomed to be a nobody. However, a series of events and discoveries sends Fleck down the path to becoming someone all of Gotham will pay attention to, but not in the way he may have intended to. . . Like many live action adaptations of superhero comics, the film goes for a more grounded and realistic approach, but this film takes it further to the point that the film has no superhero style crimefighting whatsoever and is instead a psychological character drama that is incidentally based off characters from superhero comics. Because of this, the film has a smaller budget than most superhero based properties. The film is the darkest and most violent out of all the Batman film adaptations, being the only one to be targeted towards adults. The film draws heavy inspiration stylistically and tonally from the work of director Martin Scorsese, particularly the films Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. It also stars frequent Scorsese collaborator Robert De Niro as Murray Franklin. The film is intentionally ambiguous about many plot points. Philips notes that The Joker in DC Comics lacks a concrete and definitive origin story and instead has a 'multiple choice' past. He tried to preserve this multiple choice angle by suggesting that Arthur Fleck may be an unreliable narrator and raise doubts on how much of what the viewers see onscreen is true. The film is notable for its massive amount of pre-release controversy in America where the film was caught up in the ongoing sociopolitical conflicts at the time. Critics of the film feared that the movie would encourage mass shooters, and the fear was strong enough that the US military even issued a warning against potential violence at theaters. Upon release, the film received mixed reviews from American critics, but high praise from film festivals such as the 76th Venice Film Festival where it won the Leone D'Oro award. It also scored a record 11 Oscar nominations, the most out of any comic book based film, winning 2 Oscars for Best Actor and Best Original Score. It was an enormous box office success, earning over 1 billion dollars worldwide. The film's take on the Joker became popular both for cosplay and as a political symbol for protest in Chile and Hong Kong. In spite of all the pre-release controversy, no violence ever happened at any movie theaters.
