Now Viewing: honest_axeTag type: Copyright Use this tag for any parodies of Aesop's "The Honest Woodsman". The basic story is as follows: A woodcutter accidentally drops his axe into a river. A river sprite brings up a golden axe and asks if it is his. The woodcutter answers that it is not. The sprite then brings up a silver axe, and asks the same question. Again, the woodcutter replies in the negative. Finally, the sprite brings up the original axe, and when the woodcutter truthfully replies that it is his, the sprite is impressed by his honesty and gives him all three axes. Several days later, an envious neighbor drops his axe into the river, and when the sprite brings up the golden axe, claims that that was the one he dropped. The sprite is angered and vanishes, leaving the neighbor with nothing, not even his original axe. The moral: Honesty is the best policy, even at the expense of seeming self-interest.
