It was developed by the British studio Rockstar_Games (Rockstar) and was created by David Jones and Mike Dailly. The franchise began with the original Grand_Theft_Auto in 1997. Each game offers a massive city/cities for the player to explore and gameplay is split up between missions that propel the story forward and downtime where the player has a great deal of freedom to do whatever they like with their available resources. As the player characters are all criminals, the player has free reign to engage in all sorts of illegal activity provided they don't get caught by the police. The games started off with a top down isometric view, but starting with Grand Theft auto 3, became fully 3D with the camera following the player character's back. The franchise is one of the most successful and influential sandbox game franchises, paving the way for other games to create games with a similar gameplay structure or go even further in giving the player freedom. The franchise has shipped over 280 million copies and earned over $9 billion. However, it is also notorious for frequently being embroiled in controversy with the media thanks to its content with its critics frequently accusing it of glorifying or encouraging criminal behavior.
