Now Viewing: god_handTag type: Copyright Comedic 3d beat em up game developed by the now defunct Clover Studios, whose members would later form Platinum Games. It was directed by Mikami Shinji and was released on September 14, 2006 for the Playstation 2. It was produced by Inaba Atsushi and written by Kato Hiroki. Music is composed by Takada Masafumi and Fukuda Jun. Gene is a fight loving drifter who ends up losing his right arm after trying to save a young woman named Olivia from some thugs. Olivia thanks Gene by attaching a disembodied right arm that she was carrying in a box where Gene's right arm used to be. This right arm turns out to be one of the God Hands, literally the hands of a god like warrior in ancient times. Olivia proceeds to drag Gene into preventing the resurrection of the Demon King Angra who had been defeated by the previous possessor of the God Hands. Gene somewhat reluctantly goes on a quest to defeat the Four Devas (demons who are attempting to resurrect the Demon King), but things grow more complicated when he learns that one of its members has the other God Hand. . . The game is notable for its extreme difficulty even though it has unlimited continues. The game adjusts the difficulty depending on how the player does. If the player is effortlessly plowing through the bad guys, the game gets increasingly difficult; if the player keeps getting killed, the game gets easier. The game uses an over the shoulder third person perspective much like Mikami's previous game Resident Evil 4. God Hand's spiritual successors Madworld and Max Anarchy would use a similar technique. The game also features wacky enemies like a luchadore gorilla who the player can hit in the groin and a midget sentai team with high pitched squeaky voices. The player can also take out female enemies by spanking them really hard rapidly. The game is often thought of as a comedic version of Hokuto no Ken due to having a similar wasteland like setting, the punk-esque designs of the random henchmen, and Gene's ability to throw rapid-fire punches. This game is also the start of Clover Studios/Platinum Games' habit of putting shonen anime-inspired pummel duels in their games. Despite the game's cult popularity, the game is so far the only Capcom/Clover game to not receive representation in Capcom's crossovers although Capcom did consider including Gene in Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 before settling on Amaterasu from Ookami. Not to be confused with the villains from Berserk.
