Now Viewing: cowboy_bebopTag type: Copyright カウボーイビバップ Genre blending, episodic, science fiction action crime series. It originated as a 26 episode anime TV series in 1998, and has been adapted into manga and has a movie spinoff. The TV series ran from April 3, 1998 to June 26, 1998. The TV series and film are directed by Watanabe Shinichiro, his first work as a solo director after he co-directed Macross Plus. The series was written by Nobumoto_Keiko and its jazz soundtrack was composed by Kanno_Yoko, both of whom also worked on said anime. The soundtrack was performed by The Seatbelts, a large musical group which included Kanno herself and was specifically assembled for this series' soundtrack. The characters were designed by Kawamoto_Toshihiro. It tells the story of the Bebop_crew, a group of space bounty hunters and their various bounty hunting jobs. It is also about the crew's past. Each of the crew members, particularly the protagonist Spike_Spiegel, have to confront unresolved issues in their past. The episodic nature of the series allows for episodes to be done in all sorts of styles and tones with some episodes being borderline parodies of genres while others are gritty and serious and the series was advertised as a new genre unto itself. The series also pays homage to various movies. For example, the first episode's antagonists are modeled after the main characters of the action movie Desperado and the episodes Ballad_of_Fallen_Angels and the final two episodes of the series are reminiscent of Hong_Kong heroic bloodshed gangster movies particularly those directed by John_Woo. While the series is not a musical, it has a strong emphasis on music, particularly jazz. In fact, the soundtrack was one of the first things the creators worked on, even before the story and visual aesthetic was finalized. Many of the episode titles are also references to music. Watanabe closely worked with Kanno on the music although she would often compose in a way different from what he told her to do. He was inspired by Kanno's compositions and would change the story just to accommodate her music. Kanno herself was also surprised by the way Watanabe would use her music in the series. The series has received a strong positive critical reception, particularly in the Western hemisphere. It has also influenced Western pop culture with filmmaker Rian Johnson citing the anime as a big influence on him, particularly his film Brick. Its popularity in the West led to the creation of an English language live action adaptation series produced by Netflix, developed by Andre Nemec, that started on November 19, 2021. The live action series stars John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, and Daniela Pineda as Spike, Jet, and Faye, respectively. Kanno Yoko returned to compose the soundtrack, a decision several of the creators insisted on as they felt her music was integral to the franchise's identity. Original director Watanabe Shinichiro was also consulted for the show's production though he had little involvement otherwise. The original seiyuu, except Ishizuka_Unshou (Jet Black) due to his passing, reprised their roles for the Japanese dub of the series. The series incorporates quite a few characters and stories from the original, but it makes some significant changes to some of them. It was not as popularly received as the anime was, being canceled after only one season. Although the anime is generally not considered to be a mecha series, the series made its debut in the mecha crossover franchise Super Robot Wars in Super Robot Wars T.
