Now Viewing: higurashi_no_naku_koro_niTag type: Copyright (ひぐらしのなく頃に) Popular horror/mystery series created by Ryukishi07. The title translates to When the Cicadas Cry. The series originated as an unpublished theater script by Ryukishi07 called Hinamizawa Teiryuujo (雛見沢停留所 Hinamizawa Bus Stop). Ryukishi07 rewrote the story turning it into a visual novel divided into multiple story arcs (the first arc being released in 2002), and has been adapted into anime, manga, and a live action film and TV series. The anime TV series and its related OVAs was animated by Studio_Deen, and began on April 4, 2006. It was directed by Kon Chiaki (who directed the two seasons of the show and the first OVA), written by Kawase Toshifumi, and featured a soundtrack composed by Kawai Kenji. The characters were designed by Sakai_Kyuta. The series received a new anime adaptation in July 2020, which reunites all of the original seiyuu and again features a soundtrack by Kawai. However, this second anime was animated by Passione, directed by Kawaguchi Keiichiro, written by Hayashi Naoki, and features character designs by Watanabe_Akio, which gives this incarnation a notably different style from its predecessor. Due to the plot twist heavy nature of the series, those who haven't experienced the series and wish to remain unspoiled would be advised to not click on this tag or any of the tags of characters from this series, or look up any further information on the Internet. Maebara Keiichi moves into the peaceful rural town of Hinamizawa (based on the real life village Shirakawa, Gifu). Soon after he meets them in class, he befriends Sonozaki Mion, Ryuugu Rena, Furude Rika, and Houjou Satoko and plays many games with them. The transition to rural life seems to be going smoothly for him. But this peaceful life is suddenly disrupted after photographer Jirou Tomitake and his girlfriend Takano Miyo are discovered to have been brutally killed after the annual Watanagashi Festival. Rika dies soon after them, and Keiichi begins to suspect that his new friends and Hinamizawa in general may be hiding something. . . It is notable for its dissonance between its moe art style and dark and brutal storyline. Mood shifts between slapstick humor and seriously portrayed graphic violence are not uncommon. The deranged expressions the characters make during particularly creepy scenes is often referenced and parodied in fan art. Ryukishi07 was influenced by the works of the visual novel/utsuge company Key, particularly their novels' tendency to start off lighthearted and carefree before plunging into heavy drama. Ryukishi07 followed the same storytelling style only with drama replaced with horror. He would later go on to work with Key themselves on the visual novel Rewrite. He was also influenced by novelist Yokomizo Seishi when designing the Higurashi's setting. Ryukishi07 structured the plot so that the truth would only come to light after going through multiple overlapping stories. Although the main characters consist of 1 male and multiple attractive females, the series is not a harem series and the story's emphasis is more on friendship and trust as well as solving the complex mystery.
