It is still directed by Itsuno Hideaki, who directed the controversial Devil May Cry 2. The artwork was handled by Ikeno_Daigo. The story was written by Morihashi Bingo and Yanagihara Takayasu, both of who would continue writing all subsequent sequels. Music is composed by Shibata Tetsuya and Hasegawa Kento and the metal vocal songs are performed by Shawn McPherson. The game's cutscenes are directed by Shimomura Yuji who has previously choreographed fight scenes for Japanese live action films and does the same for this game's cutscenes. Shin Megami Tensei artist Kaneko_Kazuma also designed Dante and Vergil's Devil Trigger forms. Teenage Dante is just about to open his demon hunting business when he is greeted by a bald and intimidating man named Arkham who 'invites' Dante to come to the Temen-ni-gru, a large tower that can connect the human and demon worlds. Dante soon learns that Arkham is working with Dante's estranged twin brother Vergil who plans to use Dante's half of the amulet their mother left them to connect the worlds. Dante ventures into the tower to stop Vergil and Arkham. The game was designed in response to criticism of Devil May Cry 2. Unlike the previous entry, director Itsuno and his team were afforded more time and creative control over the game. Itsuno saw this game as his chance at redemption for the predecessor and if the game had failed, he would've quit the video game industry altogether. Dante's trash talking personality is brought back and the game's difficulty was increased to the point that it's generally agreed that this installment of the series is the most difficult Devil May Cry game to date. The game also expands on the combat system with the introduction of the style system; players have the option to pick which style they want Dante to fight in whenever they take on a mission in order to give the player the opportunity to use weapons in new and stylish ways. There is also a style gauge encouraging players to defeat enemies using the most impressive combos they can devise; combat in this game is made faster than its predecessors to accommodate this. The game's camera was also designed to focus on the player to avoid disorienting the player during battle. This game was also the first in the series to use motion capture. Stuntman/voice actor Reuben Langdon did both motion capture and voice work for Dante and even played Dante in a live action commercial for Devil May Cry 3. This proved to be his breakthrough as a voice actor and other video game/anime roles followed. Daniel Southworth performed both motion capture and voice work for Vergil. While this was not the first game to feature Vergil, it was this installment that catapulted Vergil into becoming a highly popular character and his subsequent appearances are based off of his appearance in this game. The game received an updated rerelease titled Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition which added a Vergil mode and adjusted the difficulty. Vergil lets players play as Vergil and adds a few cutscenes, but the game is otherwise the same as Dante's mode. Like the original game, Devil May Cry 3 has an Easy mode that is unlocked after the player dies three times. It also has a special difficulty mode called Heaven or Hell where everyone including the player dies in one hit. The game was much better received critically and financially than its predecessor, receiving generally positive reviews. The original release sold 1.3 million copies, and the special edition sold 1 million copies. Many of the entries in the True Style Tournament, an unofficial Devil May Cry tournament where players submit videos showcasing their most impressive combos and techniques, involve footage from this game.
