Now Viewing: kanzaki_sumireTag type: Character 神崎 すみれ A brown-haired young woman who wears a purple kimono that loosely covers her shoulders. She wears a white head band. She was one of the main characters and potential love interests of the Sakura_Taisen franchise during the original generation era, which ran from the original game to Sakura_Taisen_IV. She was designed by Fujishima_Kousuke. She is part of the Imperial Combat Revue's Flower Division, and had a major hand in the development of the Kobu mechs the team uses. The mechs were designed by her family's industry, and she was the first successful pilot of the mechs. Like her fellow revue members, she doubles as an actress and is the most diva-like out of all the members, presenting herself as a refined and elegant superstar. This often leads her to clash with Kirishima Kanna who is more straightforward and tomboyish in personality with Kanna often insulting her by calling her a cactus. She also acts prickly and impatient towards Shinguuchi Sakura because of her clumsiness and inexperience. In spite of her ego, she comes to sincerely love and care for all of her fellow members, Kanna and Sakura included. In combat, she uses a naginata. She is voiced by Tomizawa_Michie, who also played the character on stage and her real life eventually affected the use of her character. In 2002, she announced that she was getting married and would retire from voice acting. This inspired the franchise creators to retire Sumire as well. In-universe, Sumire retires because she has lost the ability to pilot the Kobu mechs, and holds one last stage performance as a final hurrah. Tomizawa did not completely quit voice acting and appeared in a few anime over the next decade, but she drastically reduced the amount of roles she took since the 1980s-1990s. Sumire herself did not appear in any new Sakura Taisen work until the franchise was revived with Shin_Sakura_Taisen in 2019 with Tomizawa reprising her role. In Shin Sakura Taisen, Sumire is one of the last OG members to be confirmed alive in the main story and becomes the new captain of the Flower Division. She is slightly redesigned by the game's character designer Kubo_Taito. She still wears a purple kimono, but removes her white headband. Her kimono now has feather-like adornments around her shoulders, and she exposes less skin than she used to. As a captain, she is considerably less cocky than she was in her youth and is more openly more considerate towards others though she still retains some of her old pride and memories from her days at the Flower Division.
