It is one of the three story paths of the original Fate/Stay Night visual novel and is the darkest and most violent of the three. The three paths of Fate/Stay Night are mutually exclusive with each one having its own twists so be wary of spoilers if you haven't seen this path yet. It was adapted as a trilogy of films by ufotable that ran from 2017 to 2020. The films were all directed by Sudou Tomonori and written by Hiyama Akira. Kajiura Yuki returns from Fate/Zero to compose the soundtrack. In this path, Matou Sakura becomes the female lead. Sakura appeared to be a normal girl who happens to be close friends with Emiya Shirou, but in this path Shirou learns the dark truth about Sakura, who turns out to have far greater magic power than her brother Shinji. Sakura is actually a participant in the Holy Grail War, and she has been groomed to be so from a young age by her grandfather Matou Zouken who put her through a traumatic and abusive training regimen. The abuse she suffered while in the Matou household is one of the reasons Sakura found herself growing attached to Shirou who treated her with kindness. Even after Shirou learns the truth about Sakura, he accepts her for who she is and the two enter a relationship. Unfortunately, Zouken is not finished with his plans for Sakura, and his gambit to win the Holy Grail War with Sakura will force Shirou to choose whether or not he should save the woman he loves or save 'everyone' like a champion of justice he aspired to be.
