It was released on March 1, 2019 for Windows, XBOX One, and Playstation 4. Like its predecessor, it was directed by Shimbori Yohei. The soundtrack was composed by Kinoshita Yosuke and Araba Hiromu. Saito_Yutaka handled the game's artwork. The game brings back most of the playable fighters from Dead or Alive 5 sans Gen Fu, Leon, and the Virtua Fighter characters. The story mode follows the same template as its predecessor, with the perspective shifting switching between the playable cast. It is also the first game where Honoka, Marie Rose, and Nyotengu, who were introduced via DLC in Dead or Alive 5, take part in the game's main story mode. The game follows the basic gameplay style established by Dead or Alive 2, but introduces a new Fatal Reversal mechanic where a character can stun their opponent momentarily and instantly move behind them setting up for further attacks. The game's combat is also slightly more brutal than past installments with characters showing bruises and dirt as they take more damage. Certain powerful attacks will be punctuated with a close up slow motion impact. The game introduces Diego and Nico to the franchise's cast and adds Kula Diamond as a guest character. While Team Ninja had attempted this to a lesser extent in Dead or Alive 5, this installment intentionally and controversially toned down the series' famous fanservice as part of a bid to get more fighting game players to take the series seriously. Namely, the studio wanted the game to be considered suitable for the most prominent fighting game esports tournament, EVO. Unfortunately for the studio, their attempt to do so failed thanks to a racy EVO Japan 2019 stream featuring gravure idols Kuramochi Yuka and Yoshida Saki. The stream was suddenly cut short and EVO president Joey Cuellar released a statement that said that what was seen on the stream did not reflect EVO's 'core values', a statement that became the most popular meme associated with the game.
