As the final PC-98 Touhou game, Mystic Square's gameplay is the most similar to that of the Windows games. For no apparent reason, demons and youkai overran Gensoukyou once more, this time from a cave leading to Makai_(Touhou). Hakurei Reimu, Kirisame Marisa, Mima and Kazami Yuuka, each with their own agenda, decide to enter the cave in search of the root of the problem. The game also marks the first appearance of Alice_Margatroid as Alice_Margatroid_(PC-98), Stage 3 and Extra Stage Boss. Later Alice_Margatroid became a recurring playable character for the Windows generation games.
