It originated as a comic written and drawn by the two of them that debuted in 1984. The original concept of the series originated as a humorous sketch of a turtle with a mask and nunchucks strapped to it, the prototype of the character Michelangelo, drawn by Eastman while he was hanging out with Laird. The two men thought the drawing was funny because of the contrast between the slowness of a turtle and the speed and agility of Japanese martial arts. The two men expanded the drawing, which led to the creation of the original comic. The comic's success led to multiple animated, live action, and video game adaptations, and numerous toys. Despite its origins as a comic, the original has mostly been overshadowed in popular consciousness by the widely popular animated adaptations. While each incarnation of the franchise has a different story, tone, and style, they generally follow the adventures of the eponymous characters: Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael, who were originally four regular turtles who were exposed to mutagen, causing them to mutate into humanoid turtles who are perfectly capable of speech and human movement. They are raised by the similarly humanoid rat Splinter, who teaches them Japanese martial arts and acts as their surrogate father. With their superb martial arts skills they protect New York City from various evildoers, but particularly the Foot Clan, a clan of evil ninjas. The franchise is often known as a family-friendly series, thanks in part to the influence and popularity of the more light-hearted and comedic 1987 Ninja Turtles animation, but the original incarnation was darker and more violent. This was because it was heavily inspired by and is a parody of the work of Frank Miller, who is well known for his gritty comics. In particular, the comic was inspired by his run on Daredevil. Subsequent adaptations often flip-flop between being humorous or serious in tone, but they generally lack the bloodshed of the original incarnation. A crossover film called Turtles Forever that combines the various incarnations of the Turtles and doubles as a sequel to the 2003 version, was released in 2009.
