It debuted on 2009 and became highly popular, scoring 7.9 million hits by June 2012, and catching the interest of mangaka Murata_Yusuke who offered to adapt it into manga. Murata's digital manga adaptation began on June 4, 2012, and is serialized in Shuueisha's webcomic site, "Tonari no Young Jump". This version has an English alternate title, "OnePunch-Man". It was adapted into an anime TV series by Madhouse, which started on October 5, 2015. The anime is directed by Natsume Shingo and written by Suzuki Tomohiro. The soundtrack is composed by Miyazaki Makoto. With each adaptation, the series became increasingly popular; the manga sold 4.5 million copies by November 2014. It is set in the fictional Japanese metropolis City Z, which is plagued with constant invasions from all sorts of powerful monsters. To defend the city, a Hero Association of superheroes has been set up, who are humanity's only hope against their myriad enemies, but the strongest superhero of them all is Saitama, a former salaryman who decided to become a superhero as a hobby. To that end, he trained himself until he became so powerful that he only needs one punch to defeat virtually any enemy. In spite of his godlike power, he is also the most obscure superhero in the city, with virtually nobody recognizing his accomplishments, and when he isn't fighting powerful monsters he lives an unglamorous and mundane life in a small apartment fretting over issues like paying the rent and discounts. Furthermore, his extreme power is also something of a curse, he never gets the sense of adventure and excitement he craves because he has difficulty finding anyone who can pose a challenge to him, so even what would be epic battles for others are boring to him. Nevertheless, the vengeance-driven cyborg Genos recognizes Saitama's achievements and asks to become his disciple to figure out what makes Saitama so powerful. Together, the two of them officially join the Heroes Association and the series follows their adventures as they battle various monsters and climb the ranks. The series is both an over the top superhero action story and a parody of superhero and shonen action manga, making fun of their conventions while exploring what it means to be a true hero. Each incarnation of the series has, for the most part, the same plot and sequence of events. However, there are differences in the presentation of those events. One's original webcomic notably has a more simplistic art-style wheres Murata's digital manga is notable for its high level of visual detail and distinctive panel arrangements; in many scenes, the transitions between panels are seamless to the point that if one were to rapidly flip through its pages, it would look like an animated sequence. The original artstyle is still paid tribute to as Saitama and Tatsumaki are frequently drawn in a simplified and somewhat crude way in comedic scenes and in the case of former, to show how little he cares for what's going on. However, when both characters get serious they will suddenly shift to Murata's highly detailed style like the rest of the cast. The anime adaptation follows Murata's visual approach to story.
