It is Studio Trigger's second original anime production, made after Inferno Cop, and is their most light-hearted and family-friendly work. Unlike its predecessor, Little Witch Academia is much more detailed in its animation than the more low budget Inferno Cop. The original short film was released on March 2, 2013. It was part of the Anime Mirai 2013 project which is meant to train young animators and showcase their work. The anime is notable for being one of the most popular creations to emerge from the Anime Mirai 2013 project. While Studio Trigger had the funds for another twenty minute episode, it decided to start a Kickstarter campaign to raise more money to extend the episode in response to positive reception towards the original short. Within five hours, the studio quickly achieved its goal of 150,000 dollars. Trigger then set 500,000 dollars as the goal to fund the Blu-ray release so that the Blu-rays can include a behind the scenes documentary as well as an audio commentary, which was satisfied as well. Ultimately, the Kickstarter campaign earned $625,518 and the second Little Witch Academia film, Little Witch Academia: Mahou Shikake no Parade was released on July 3, 2015. The success of both OVAs led to the creation of a full TV series, which ran from January 8, 2017 to June 26, 2017. The special documentary featured on the Blu-ray primarily follows the young animators working underneath the veteran animator and director Yoshinari_You and shows the kind of work they had to do while making the anime as well as the learning experiences they had. The documentary is narrated by Shiny Chariot's seiyuu Hidaka Noriko. The anime OVAs and TV series are directed by Yoshinari_You and written by Otsuka Masahiko. It was produced by Tsutsumi Naoko. The orchestral score is composed by Oshima Michiru. The OVAs and TV series are set in an England where witches and regular humans live side-by-side with the general public being fully aware of the witches' existence. The story follows the adventures of Akko Kagari, an idealistic aspiring witch who enrolls into the Luna Nova Academy, and her friends Lotte Jansson and Sucy Manbablan as they study witchcraft. Akko was inspired to become a witch when she, as a little girl, watched a spectacular magic show performed by the witch Shiny Chariot. Unfortunately, Akko does not come from a family of witches and lacks many of the basic skills her classmates have, leading her to perform the worst in her classes. Furthermore, Akko's idol Shiny Chariot is held with contempt by her classmates who view Chariot as a fraud and a disgrace to other witches. Akko, however, refuses to give up on her dream and her belief that Shiny Chariot is a great witch. Although the OVA and TV series are made by mostly the same cast and crew and have a similar tone and premise, they are not in the same continuity. The TV series serves as a reboot, choosing to start the story from the beginning, and makes a few changes to the story and characterization that contradict what happened in the original OVAs.
