Well if he angles his gun up as he pulls the trigger the kick would push it over his head, at worse causing pain to his arm.

He also has a cleaner critical shot. The other guy will be guaranteed no more then a lung.

And, pistol guy wouldn't be able to get a shot off unless he shoots first, otherwise he'll be too busy being dead to make a shot.
