I wouldn't say he couldn't spell, I would call it a drawing error.
Kinda like a writing error or a typing error?
People make mistakes, it's common. I mean he spelt all the other Final Fantasy IX right so how would that make sense if that was the case?

well, look at the small chalkboard blank (i think his name is) is holding up in the first pic, with its "I want become small bird."
that Finl Fantsy XI is done on purpose... the members of tantalus just can't spell.
