That always did bug me about the Final Fantasy games where you had multiple girls to potentially end up with. But by the end it turns out that one was definitely the right choice. I guess narratively speaking, it would be too hard to give all the girls time and it’d be more emotionally impactful to put all of your eggs into one basket. So don’t give the player options or this fake illusion of choice if you’re not willing to commit.

It just sucks when you like a certain girl more but it’s impossible to actually get an ending with her because there isn’t one even it though seemed like there might be so settle for the girl that was chosen for you.

FF8 never gives you any illusion of choice. It's clear as day early on that Squall finds Quistis coming on him annoying and unprofessional. He also never displays any attraction towards Selphie, or her towards him for that matter. Rinoa was billed as his love interest from their first encounter, hell they're even on the logo.

The only FF game where you comment could apply would be 7 and it's likely done purposely to mess with the player.
