actually, shaving the pubes can lead to skin and vaginal infections if you're not really careful

Not taking care of yourself period, can lead to many kinds of infection & illnesses. Like an unclean uncircumcised penis could lead to infection too. <3

Apples to oranges. It's the removal of the hair that can cause problems, since that leaves follicles open and inflamed when they're not supposed to be. Combine that with the whole genital area being constantly warm and frequently damp, and it pretty much becomes a petri dish for bacteria. You're looking at a vastly-increased likelihood of strep and staph infections of the skin. Abscesses and pustules can develop that require surgical draining, which leaves scars. This has been noted to occur even in people who take great care in keeping themselves clean. Though poor hygiene can make any condition worse, it's not a lack of hygiene that's causing the condition in the first place.

(All of this, by the way, is also true for guys.)

Do with your junk what you like, but seriously, be aware of the risks.
