@Anon4 He's not wrong, Serena had little to no personality outside of her crush on Ash. Shipping or not, Ash's relationship with her was by far the weakest and most one-sided of his relationships with any of his companions. SM just started, and Ash's relationships with his new friends are already more mutual than his "relationship" with Serena.
She's not even a character, she's just waifubait. Not that being waifubait is bad, as long as there's an actual character to accompany it, but there is no character with Serena. She's just Ash's waifu.

It seems that people focus on the crush more then the show itself did. Her main thing was performing. With a few exceptions, Serena's crush was treated as her joke. Like Clemont with his inventions and Brock with girls. Fandom seems to have greatly exaggerated both the significance and frequency of shipping moments in the show. Just like how people now talk about Ash's harem in Alola despite there being no actual romance in Sun & Moon.
