I never understood why Esdeath threw her sword in this scene. It was such a mind numbly stupid move against an opponent who is clearly fast enough to dodge it. Plus it ended up weakening her defense since her sword was more durable than her ice.

But i guess they had to make her do some stupid stuff in order to get Akame to win even with her deus ex powerup that made no sense.

She obviously threw her sword cause she knew she could dodge it, that was the whole point. She threw her sword so she could lure her closer to use her trump card to stop time and kill her. If esdeath was less sadistic, than she would have caught akame. also, this is shounen, it isn't always supposed to make sense. if you want things to make sense, stop watching anime in general.

Your theory would make sense if it was actually in Esdeath's character. Esdeath likes relishing in a good fight and only uses her trump card if she ABSOLUTELY has too. So I highly doubt she all of a sudden lowered her defense against an opponent who can kill her with one small mistake just to let her get closer for her time stop ability. It would be completely out of character for her and would ultimately not be worth the risk. Hell even if that is the case if she just wanted to lure her closer for the time stop she could have just casted it as soon as Akame dodged her sword instead of waiting till the last second. Regardless it doesn't really matter how close she was. Stopping time doesn't exactly allow your opponent to move away from you or anything. Hell she could have just used it a mid range and it would have worked. That aferimage thing is pretty bullshit logically speaking but then again the series never really used logic to begin with. (shrugs)

The anime started so good, but it became predictable and painful to watch. The plot went from okay to plain bad. I read the manga and I understand that they had to make a different ending because the manga is still ongoing, but it is crystal clear where they stopped following the manga. I have watched the anime before the manga and I still noticed it. They had builed up to the point where Akame was going to fight her sister and it was so lame.

I still love Esdeath though.

Actually it does make sense. You just missed the context. Every Imperial Arms has a "trump card". Literally everyone showed and or mentioned theirs at some point. Akame never mentioned hers. Yagaratsu can bring the dead back to life. Muramasa can infuse the negative feelings of all dead souls killed with the sword, stacking the power of each of those souls giving her superhuman traits. That is what you are seeing here.

There is nothing to figure out tbh. Let alone say that it "makes no sense".

Also they were obviously building up for the "afterimage". Why the hell else would akame randomly dart around like a maniac near the end, her usual strat is to always be direct. Another dead giveaway...

@Severontous

I remember she mentioned that she couldn't cut herself with her own sword or she'd die. What so that was just a lie? And I'm supposed to just believe she CAN cut herself and using this power has NO consequences? Really?

Honestly I wouldn't mind the powerup so much if it was at the cost of her life. Then it would make a little sense. Because really WHY wouldn't she use this all the time if she suffers no repercussions from using it? She could just have her teammates hold off their opponents and BAM! Everyone is dead. And don't give me that "oh she had to keep it hidden" bullshit. She and her friends have been in life/death situations all throughout the series. In the event of facing a tough enemy it should ALWAYS warrant a transformation. She could successfully kill ANY enemy they came across so it's not like they would have to worry about this power getting leaked out to the enemy.

But nope she just saves it for this final battle alone. It's not only stupid but makes her seem like an asshole. Heck she didn't even use it until Esdeath beat the crap out of her. What's the freaking point? She should have known that beating Esdeath in her base form is impossible.

Also you are completely wrong about the "moving around like a maniac near the end thing" thing. She was doing that almost IMMEDIATELY after she transformed. Did you even watch the damn episode? She even made it clear near the end that she was running out of energy so of COURSE she would be darting around like a maniac to get a hit. Going at Esdeath straight up wouldn't work with that ice defense of hers anyway.

ALSO the reason the aferimage thing wouldn't work is because it defines the laws of motion. If something is moving at an incredible speed you'll see afterimages or it will appear to be moving in slow motion (what you see in a traditional fan). If you were to stop time however the afterimage would disappear. It doesn't suddenly become a image that you can interact with. It doesn't just become a ghost like it did in the anime.

To make things worse as Esdeath's time stop effect was disappearing and time began to move again (slowly) the fucking after image was STILL there! How the hell does that make any damn sense? She'd have to be moving at near the speed of light for this to actually happen which I'm sure you can guess is total bullshit. Not to mention it would require impossibly perfect timing which is what also makes it stupid.

I know someone is going to chime in saying "anime logic" and to be fair most of the fights are stupid to begin with. Even so I'd like there to be a legitimate way for the final boss to be beat than some asspull powerup and this afterimage trickery that shouldn't have even worked.

All I know about the anime is its story seems to diverge from the manga's at some point.
From the looks of these comments, it might have been a mistake.
Then again, the studio probably didn't think they'd get to make a second season, so they wrapped it up how they felt like.
