A dog's penis has a large bulb at the end of the shaft called the "knot." When a dog inserts his penis into a vagina, the knot swells to tie him to the bitch. At which point, the bitch's vagina does the stimulation (which is why they always look bored during breeding). The knot helps ensure that another competitor cannot separate the two and also helps ensure fertilization.
