If people don't like the image, they will vote it down. This is not a popularity contest. This site is not meant to boost your ego by making you feel good that you uploaded an image that got a lot of upvotes. The score system is there purely to differentiate good images from bad ones. People voting it down means they're actually doing their job, if they in fact do not like the image. People voting it up means they're doing their job if they like the image. There's nothing more to it than that.
