It's not ugly at all, and he's a great artist. It's that it's just his style when it comes to character design.

Art is much more than just pretty faces and body shapes. His backgrounds and environments are amazing. His art is even more epic in the color. And let's not forget about unforgettable scenes like "Nothing....nothing at all".
